Thread Count Demystified

Thread Count SDH Legna Seville

Do you really know what your bedding’s thread count really means? Do you purchase the highest thread count to symbolize a higher status? Choosing quality bedding is just as important as purchasing bedroom furniture. Consumers need to understand that thread count along does not mean quality.

What is Thread Count?

Thread Count

Sheet manufacturers describe the phrase “thread count” as the amount of plied yarns woven together length and width-wise within a square inch. For example, 190 yarns running length-wise, and 110 yarns width-wise woven together would be a bed sheet with 300 thread count (190+110). Just because you purchase the highest thread count on the market doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll have the most comfortable bedding. So before you waste your money, here are some of the factors you must consider on top of the thread count:

  • The machines used for spinning the yarn
  • The length of the yarn fiber and what the yarn is made of.
  • The different woven methods
  • Etc.

Here are the 4 weave methods typically used for bedding:

  • Sateen: Sateen has more yarn surface on the surface of the cloth than most basic weaves. It has a softer and more sheen look as well.
  • Jersey: A stitch knitted construction that is very elastic.
  • Flannel: A nice soft twill weave made from cotton with a fluffy appearance and feel.
  • Percale: Very closely woven and top of its class. Very silky feeling due to the high thread count.

Final Tips Before Purchasing Bedding

  • Make you’re able to touch the material of your bedding at the store. Hopefully they have a showroom where you can test out the comfort on a bed.
  • It’s best to wash the new bedding first before putting it on your bed.
  • Make sure you purchase the correct bedding for the right bed size you have at home.
