A platform bed is a great choice for a bed. Platform beds come in various sizes, material, finish, style and quality. Hence it is important to know what you are looking for before you go ahead and buy one. These beds are low and make your bedroom look bigger. Since they are closer to the ground they also remain cooler in the nights.
Points to remember:
• Platform beds come in a variety of materials. You have a choice in the color of your wood like, dark rich woods, light and other airy colors. And make sure your bed is mad of solid wood. In the market, some beds are available that are made of heavy duty cardboard covered with veneer, which wont last long. These should be avoided.
• Slats: Most high quality platform beds have slats to support the mattress. If you have a memory foam mattress, then it is advisable to use a thin plywood sheet under the mattress to protect it. Similarly even if you want to use a spring mattress, a thin plywood or cardboard sheet will give the mattress longer life. Some platform beds come without slats or a platform which will require you to use box springs. These will sag in sometime because of the absence of slats. So it is always wiser to go for platform beds with slats or a proper platform.
• Beds fitted together with mortise and tenon joinery are sturdier than the ones fitted with screws and can last for decades when made with good wood. And the one fitted with screws are sturdier than those fitted with nails.
The simplest platform beds come with no headboard and footboard. Some of the more sophisticated platform beds come with a canopy and storage units. Rolling drawers can be fitted into the bed to help you store stuff.
Before you make the purchase make sure you know what you want. If you want a strong bed that you will be keeping forever in the family or a cheaper one which is easier to sell if you are going to move soon. When a bed is made with the best wood with the right kind of construction, they can last for centuries. Also but one in a size that best suits you and make sure u get a mattress that fits the size perfectly. Some fancy flourishes can also be added according to your design if you get it custom made.

Very helpful. Thanks for the tips. My wife and I had a cheap platform bed that lasted about 5 years and finally broke about two years ago. We’ve been sleeping on the mattress and a box spring on the floor ever since.

Very informative. I would like to add if you have allergies look into a laytex model. If not my sister and I tried that sleep number bed while staying at a hotel. We really enjoyed it. My sister likes a little firmer bed while I like it a little softer.
