How to Choose the Right Platform Bed for Your Home Décor

One of the rooms that reflect your personality is your bedroom. And it is important to make it as comfortable and perfect as you can. One feature that will stand out is your bed. A platform bed is a great choice for a bed. Platform beds come in various sizes, material, finish, style and quality. Hence it is important to know what you are looking for before you go ahead and buy one. These beds are low and make your bedroom look bigger. Since they are closer to the ground they also remain cooler in the nights.

Points to remember:

• Platform beds come in a variety of materials. You have a choice in the color of your wood like, dark rich woods, light and other airy colors. And make sure your bed is mad of solid wood. In the market, some beds are available that are made of heavy duty cardboard covered with veneer, which wont last long. These should be avoided.

• Slats: Most high quality platform beds have slats to support the mattress. If you have a memory foam mattress, then it is advisable to use a thin plywood sheet under the mattress to protect it. Similarly even if you want to use a spring mattress, a thin plywood or cardboard sheet will give the mattress longer life. Some platform beds come without slats or a platform which will require you to use box springs. These will sag in sometime because of the absence of slats. So it is always wiser to go for platform beds with slats or a proper platform.

• Beds fitted together with mortise and tenon joinery are sturdier than the ones fitted with screws and can last for decades when made with good wood. And the one fitted with screws are sturdier than those fitted with nails.

The simplest platform beds come with no headboard and footboard. Some of the more sophisticated platform beds come with a canopy and storage units. Rolling drawers can be fitted into the bed to help you store stuff.

Before you make the purchase make sure you know what you want. If you want a strong bed that you will be keeping forever in the family or a cheaper one which is easier to sell if you are going to move soon. When a bed is made with the best wood with the right kind of construction, they can last for centuries. Also but one in a size that best suits you and make sure u get a mattress that fits the size perfectly. Some fancy flourishes can also be added according to your design if you get it custom made.

Dining Room Furniture: Make It Happen

dining room furniture

If you’re anything like me, most of your in-home socializing takes place around food. Friends and family spend a lot of time at my home eating, drinking, and talking around the dining room table. I recently renovated the space and shelled out for brand new dining room furniture. Despite my initial fears, I didn’t spend much, and the task proved more enjoyable than I thought it would be.

Before I began shopping I took measurements of my dining room. As I learned the hard way, you definitely need to make sure to have your dimensions with you when you go furniture shopping. The last time I went shopping for a dining room set, I was distraught to find that my dining room furniture did not actually fit in the nook between my living room and kitchen. Now that I actually have a dining room, I knew I had more space for creativity, but I certainly wasn’t going to take any risks.

As with shopping for any home furnishings, you need to know what exactly your furniture functions to do everyday. While this may seem a little obvious, there are practical considerations that often go overlooked. Sure, you’re going to eat on your dining table, and your dining room furniture functions in part as décor, but beyond that, what else? I play cards on my dining table. A lot of hands touch the table top, and sometimes, in moments of angst, those hands don’t touch gently. I knew a glass top was not for me. No, I needed something sturdy that wouldn’t show fingerprints. Dark wood seemed suitable and durable for what I needed.

Aesthetically speaking, you want your dining room to be pleasing to all who enter (unless you’re sick of cooking and serving friends and you want to send a very passive message to stop coming). I personally enjoy guests, and I have a sort of Zen theme going in my home – something that offsets intense poker games. I went with a minimalist look and the dining room furniture that I purchased is very contemporary in style.

Shopping for dining room furniture can be a pleasant experience. Just try to be practical and don’t rush any major decisions. The end result will be a dining room set that you can be proud of!

Seven Things to Put on Your Coffee Table

February 13th, 2009 by admin
Respond

I have, of late, become a sort of coffee table expert. Accessories, materials, colors, and uses, etc. - when people need help with anything related to a coffee table, I’m their girl. To help you, gentle reader and coffee table owner, I have now generated a list of seven things that will jazz up your coffee table and therefore your room.

Coffee Table Accessory Number 1 – Reading Material

The tried and true accessory of a classic or contemporary coffee table. Like peanut butter and jelly, books/magazines/newspapers and the coffee table will forever go together. There is no separating the two because there is no two.

Coffee Table Accessory Number 2 – A Scrabble Board

Nothing says success! quite like a Scrabble Board. Impress your guests. Play Scrabble with them. This works extremely well in conjunction with both #1 and #3.

Coffee Table Accessory Number 3 – A Bottle Flor De Cana

Nicaraguan Rum, slow-aged since 1890; the bottles are highly ornate, and they look good on just about any coffee table. Actually, they look good just about anywhere.

Coffee Table Accessory Number 4 – One Single Flower in a Vase

I suggest an orchid. I suggest that in lieu of a vase you use an empty bottle of Flor De Cana. This adds a completely new dimension of sex appeal to your coffee table, and henceforth your living room, and thus, ultimately you.

Coffee Table Accessory Number 5 – Coasters

Another useful little item, especially for the glass coffee tables, is the coaster. A must-have for obsessive compulsives and other people who can’t stand unsightly water rings and coffee stains.[1]

Coffee Table Accessory Number 6 – A Vintage Cigar Box

Make sure you get a wooden box with Spanish writing engraved on the side. It’s guaranteed to look super swanky on your coffee table. Also, you can hide things in it.[2]

Coffee Table Accessory Number 7 – DVDs of Movies So Bad They’re Good

Because you know what the first thing your guest will say when they plop themselves down on your sofa and notices Killer Clowns From Outer Space on your coffee table? “You like this movie?!?” They’ll say. And you’ll say, “Who doesn’t?”

So there it is: seven things that will make your marvelous coffee table even more marvelous. You can mix and match. You can use just one. You can bring other great accessories into the mix. Really, there’s no limit when it comes to accessorizing your coffee table.

My main advice: accessories should reflect who you really are. And if you really can’t think of anything that reflects your true character, just use any one of my seven items and your coffee table, and living room, will look stellar.[3]

[1] A major pet peeve of mine.

[2] But don’t. Super swanky looking boxes pretty much encourages nosiness.

[3] This is baseless and subjective.

Bedroom Furniture - Keep Warm for the Winter

Bedroom Furniture Tips to Stay Warm this Winter

warm bedroom furniture

It’s that time of year again, where it gets darker sooner and the weather’s getting colder. It’s time to add some more bedding to your bedroom furniture to keep you warm at night. Summertime is over so sleeping without a blanket or down comforter should be reconsidered.

A few things to dress your bed now is a nice heavy blanket or comforter. What you can als do when you sleep at night is wear thermal socks. If you decide to turn on the central heating system, you need to make sure there are no drafts underneath the doors that will bring in the cold air outside. Go to your local hardware store and ask them what you’ll need to block the draft coming from under the doorways.

Also, if you’re window panes are old make sure that there are no openings for the hot air to escape. There are many new window panes that actually hold in the heat a lot better.

Coffee Table Accessories

coffee table

The coffee table is in an interesting piece of living room furniture. It might just be the most versatile piece in the household. When you think about it, how people use their coffee table differs from house to house. Similarly, the function one coffee table serves within the same house might be different from day to day. Because of its wide range of possible uses, the coffee table is also a difficult piece to accessorize.

Perhaps the most common function for a coffee table is simply to decorate. So many people use the coffee table in this way. Its function, in this case, is actually its form. These coffee tables are easier to accessorize because chances are that once the accessories are in place, they’ll be staying there for a while.

On the other hand, if your coffee table sees the kind of use that mine does, accessories will move on a daily basis. My coffee table is used for dining, playing Scrabble, holding beverages, resting feet, and even doing work on a laptop. Every day I use my coffee table. It therefore stands to reason that I don’t much accessorize my table.

When considering accessories for your coffee table, you should think practically. If your coffee tables sees as much daily use as mine does, don’t over accessorize. My coffee table is the permanent home to exactly three accessories: a book on art in Southern California, a book on Basquiat, and a photographic history of punk rock. At any given time those three items are on my coffee table; at any given time there might also be a dish or two, a couple of cds, a few remotes, and a laptop. But only those previous three books are there all the time. That’s practical accessorizing.

My three accessories also fall in line with the other rule of coffee table accessorizing: your accessories must match the room. Whatever you choose to display on your coffee table should bare relevance to your space. For example, if you have a rustic themed living room set with candle accessories and sylvan knick-knacks about the room, you probably don’t want to display a photographic history of punk rock. It would be out of place. It would make more sense to display something on your coffee table that matched the ambiance of the room. In my case, the room itself is awash in art and music; my coffee table accessories are an extension of that.

The other consideration is that your coffee table accessories should look good together. Whatever items you choose to display should work as a unit. In my case, the books look good next to each other. One is a thick red paper back, another is a thin black and white scrap book, and the other is a small, but colorful paperback. They are all books, but visually they provide just enough contrast that the display works well together. When you decide what you want on your coffee table, put the pieces together and see how it looks. You want it to come together as a unit.

Accessorizing your coffee table is a simple task. If you think practically about the use of your coffee table, it’s not difficult to display items that work naturally within the room. Try some different items out for size. When you find a few that look good together, stick to them. And remember that accessories aren’t permanent. Unlike wall colors or furniture itself, accessories are the one piece of home decorating that you can change them as often as you like. When you think of it that way, you realize that accessorizing your coffee table is hardly a task at all.
